STAIRLIFT COSTS AND GRANT SUPPORTS
The cost of a stair lift depends directly on your staircase and your specific needs. To estimate a realistic price for a stair lift it is necessary to take into account several factors such as the type of staircase (straight stairs , curved stairs or spiral ), the number of steps, the length of the rail ,and the number of curves. In addition to these factors, there are several models of stairlifts that offer manual or automated features that can impact the price.
The average cost of a straight stairlift is between €1300 and €3000 while the cost of a curved stairlift can vary from €4000 up to €8000 depending in the amount of bends. In some instances, a range of reconditioned stairlifts are available and may be offered from time to time.
In some instances, a grant may be available under the local authority mobility aids housing grants scheme. The grant process is means tested and is typically oversubscribed. For more information and to see if you qualify for a grant please use our home adaptation grant checklist .

HOW IS A STAIRLIFT INSTALLED?
Taking as little as a day or two, depending on the length of your stairs, stairlift installations are quick, easy, and hassle-free. All technicians need to do is drill holes through your stair tread to attach the rail, fitting it as close to the wall as possible so that it only takes up a few inches.
Once your stairlift is fitted and ready to use, the technicians will give you a demonstration of how to use your new device, ensuring you’re comfortable with the buttons and chair height before they leave.

WHICH IS THE BEST STAIRLIFT BRAND?
As an independent portal, AIP has sought out partnerships with the most reliable stairlift dealers in Ireland, ensuring that your needs are met to the highest degree possible. Though there are many factors to consider when purchasing a stairlift, with safety being the most important, here are some other factors you may want to consider:
- Ease/comfort of use
Just as with any type of chair, some are more comfortable than others, depending on your specific circumstances and the design of the chair. This varies from person to person, so if the first chair you see doesn’t fit your needs, keep looking!
- Custom design for curved stairs
Some stairlift manufacturers have a modular rail that can be shipped out in sections and fitted to your stairs. Though cheaper, these options don’t fit your stairs as well as a rail custom-made for your staircase, therefore taking up more room. If space is a concern, consider getting a custom rail.
- Personalisation options
From various chair designs to options of different colours, prints and fabrics, stairlift manufacturers may provide one design or several. From comfort to aesthetics, consider which chair best fits your needs and home.
- Warranty and aftercare
What type of warranty or aftercare is provided for your stairlift? Are annual check-ups included? Can you get a technician out to your house if something goes wrong? Will your stairlift be covered for one year, three, or more? And are parts included in that warranty?
- Longevity of company
For many, working with a reputable company is an essential factor, as you can be sure that they’ve served many happy customers before you, and have the systems in place to meet your needs, now and into the future.
- Price
Price is, of course, a crucial part of any home adaptation, but it should be considered along with all the other factors, from comfort to usability and maintenance. After all, what’s the use in having a stairlift if it doesn’t meet your needs?
